Single Gear Juicers
Masticating Juicing Machine
Contributing Author: Tom Brown
Okay, masticating juicers have a single gear or auger. The juicer-chews- or breaks up the vegetable or fruit fibers, releasing the juice. Some people feel that masticating juicers liberate more juice from the fruit or vegetable. My Champion Juicer is a masticating juicer, and I generally feel happy with the amount of juice that comes out. I do admit, I wish it did better juicing green leafy vegetables.
What about enzymes? Some people feel masticating juicers are superior because they juice at slower speeds than some other juicers. These slower speeds result in less heat, which can mean more nutrition in your juice, as vitamins and enzymes can be destroyed by heat. Masticating juicers can be used to make baby foods, pates, sauces, nut butters, seed butters, and fruit sorbets. I have heard rumors that some use their juicers to grind meat. I have never done that and will not. I am too worried about bacteria getting in my juicer and causing problems.
This issue of heat, the area with the cutter does start to warm up after a few minutes of juicing. To reduce the heat from rising, I place the produce in the fridge until I am ready to start juicing. Juicing cool produce instead of room temperature produce can keep the heat down.
Although some people think the Champion Juicer may not be the best masticating juicer for green leafy vegetables, it is possible that other masticating juicers may be better for juicing green vegetables.
I have had my Champion Juicer for about 8 or 9 years. It has held up well. The Champion Juice is covered under a warranty. It feels really sturdy. It’s fairly quiet. It has held up over the years. Look for my articles on selecting juicers, so you can get one that is right for you.
It has also been easy to clean up, especially if I clean it right after juicing. I just use some mild soap and water. Brush it a bit. And it is ready to juice again.
Now, some people will try to argue with you that you can juice with this juicer all day and all night without giving it a rest and without cleaning it. That has not been my experience.
I have noticed that after about 5 minutes the place where the juice is being made (the body of the juicer; it’s where the cutter spins around) begins to heat up. So, when I observe it is getting warm to the touch, I take it apart and clean it.

I have also noticed that if several hours go by and I don’t clean it, the vegetables I have juiced through the juicers start to dry out and get hard and stick to the juicer and can make stains. This can make it more difficult to clean. The stains may fade over time. But some pieces of my juicer are discolored because I did not clean it immediately after I used it.
Also keep in mind, some dark colored fruits or vegetables might stain your juicer, even if you do clean it immediately.
